Overview

WHATTHEYTHINK is an anonymous messaging Chrome extension that allows users to send and receive anonymous messages within groups. We take your privacy seriously and are committed to protecting your personal information.

Data We Collect

Account Information

• Username: Used to identify you within the app
• Password: Stored as a secure hash (bcrypt) - we never store plain text passwords

Group Information

• Group names you create or join
• Group membership (which groups you belong to)

Messages

• Received messages: Text content and timestamp
• Important: We do NOT store any sender information for messages. Messages are completely anonymous.

Data We Do NOT Collect

• ❌ Sender identity for messages (complete anonymity)
• ❌ Browsing history
• ❌ Personal information beyond username
• ❌ Location data
• ❌ Device information
• ❌ Analytics or tracking data

How We Use Your Data

• To authenticate you when logging in
• To display your groups and members
• To deliver anonymous messages to recipients
• To manage group memberships

Data Storage

• All data is stored securely on MongoDB Atlas servers.
• Passwords are encrypted using bcrypt hashing.
• Authentication uses secure JWT tokens.

Data Sharing

We do NOT sell, trade, or share your personal information with third parties.

Your Rights

• You can delete your messages from your inbox.
• You can leave groups at any time.
• Group admins can delete entire groups (removes all associated data).
